Weekend activities in June 2009 are exceptionally… exhausting…

June 29, 2009 – 1:36 am | No Comments »

First weekend  - Was preparing for presentation in senior management meeting… stress… the paper to be presented took me a month to complete… *STRESS*

Fourth weekend - Sentosa, Badminton, Running…

img_0259.JPG

Lunch @ Dian Xiao Er after Sentosa (Totally in love with the cod fish but totally amazed by the price too)
*Ran out of energy to take other photos*

Amazingly, I passed my IPPT after the third weekend hahahahahaha, no more RT for me =P

img_0227.JPG   img_0229.JPG

img_0230.JPG   img_0239.JPG

Rewarded myself with a sumptous meal @ Relish after passing IPPT. Panna Cotta is still my favourite!!! =D
By the way, we went there on a Wednesday night and the ambience was serene… quiet… nice… almost fell asleep while eating kakaka

I thought that I had slimmed down with all these physically draining activities… but… someone *innocently* commented that my face grew sideways recently… *sob sob*… more running next week!!!

Btw, some might know that I’ll be leaving my current workplace next Tuesday. It had been a great 2.5 yrs here and it saddens me, to certain extent, that I am leaving. I’ll be venturing in a whole new field… whether is it a greener pasture… I don’t know, but it’s definitely a place where I’ve long to go =D

Wish me luck guys!

This was even more intentional…

melacca-3.jpg

Fighting for female lead in indian movies hahaha

Since the objective of the trip is eating, most of us weren’t really interested in touring the place. Walked around the St Paul Church (I think…) for half an hour to make ourselves feel better wahahahahahahaha den went to eat again =P

4. Lunch @ Nonya Home Restaurant

nonya-food.jpg

The place was quite squeezy, think there were about 10 big tables in a two living rooms. Ordered Ayam Ponteh, Ayam Rendang, Chendoh and Nonya Chap Chai. Food wasn’t fantastic I think… but the ambience of the place was definitely a special experience.

5. Lunch 2 @ Laksa Place

big-laksa-with-chendol.jpg

3 big bowls of laksa and 7 chendols for 9 of us… quite a big feat to finish the 3 bows of laksa especially after the heavy lunch… but we finished them anyhow because of “Global Warming” (No idea why, but we kept using this to stop us from wasting food hahaha, started by Zhiwen!!! muahahahahahha)

6. Having Fun on the way to KL

on-car-1.jpg

on-car-2.jpg   on-car-3.jpg

7. Check in to MidValley Cititel

check-in-cititel.jpg

Quite a squeezy room, unlike those I saw online… personally don’t think that the room is value for money, especially after staying at JB’s Grand Paragon.

8. Dinner @ street stall selling seafood (opps din have any fotos on the food =p)

A long street of stalls selling almost the same thing. We found one that has space enuff for so many of us and free from smoky environment.

Gers went for shopping, the rest of us + Tess went to the MegaMall to search for Delectable by Su, which has very nice and cute cupcakes. After the search and tasting the cupcakes, SW, Zach and me went for an hour massage while James, Jia and Tess continue shopping.

3. Met up @ 2.45pm and went for lunch @ Nandos Chicken

Nice weekend

June 1, 2009 – 2:18 am | 1 Comment »

Just a quick update, three great things happened over the weekend.

1. Attended a crash course for some cool google apps, namely, google analytics, google adwords, google optimizer (awesome I think) and google insights. Very interesting apps even if you are just a “normal” being. And met nice people in the event too.

2. Watched Terminator Salvation. Average movie I think, what I wanted to highlight is the Funeral ad by MCYS in one of my earlier posts. It was screened before the movie started, and I’m moved to tears again even watching it like ten times already.

3. Watched He’s not that into you. Woots~~~ Super delicious movie, makes me wanna watch it again and again. Gives very interesting insights about bgr using stories that you would feel close to, it’s like, “have that happened to me before?”, “oh damn, why didn’t I think of that when I was in it, !@#$%^&*” etc. etc.

Live an Exciting Life

May 6, 2009 – 12:16 am | No Comments »

Just read an article by Pamela Slim, an entrepreneur, a coach and also a writer. In her article, she answered 12 questions posted bv Guy Kawasaki that relates to escaping the mundanity of boring corporate life. The first question caught my attention immediately,

“How do you know when it is time to quit your day job?”

Although her reply to dis question din really answer the question itself, I was tempted to continue finding out her answers to the other 11 questions.

“But isn’t it crazy to start a business in this economy?”
“How do you decide which business to start?”
“What is the very first step that I should take?”
“By the way, should a person get started and then quit or quit and then get started?”
“If you have limited financial resources, what is the best way to start a business?”
“What is the most common mistake the “escapees” make?”… and so on…

Some of these questions are exactly what I am going through right now =D

I totally agree with her saying that with the corporations facing difficulties in this recession, job stability is a thing of the past and this is a great time to start a business. As I was telling one of my friends that the risk of being retrenched might just be equivalent to the risk of starting a business, she was talking about the same thing - “In the case that you get laid off, would you be more happy having started a business at first or having spent your energy desperately clinging to your job?” This is the time when the opportunity cost to start a business is the lowest =D

The answers to the other questions help one to balance his/her situation and mental state to help that person decides if it’s the right time to move on. Very interesting article which I can totally relate myself to =)

Opps, the link to the article is http://blogs.openforum.com/2009/05/03/how-to-escape-mundanity/

Do pass it on to your friends if they are starting to feel bored with their work =P *I am so not helping the economy* whahahahahahahha

Saga with Allerin a.k.a. iphoneapps

April 29, 2009 – 7:20 pm | No Comments »

As mentioned in my previous posts, we were engaged in an arbitration case with our ex website developer, Allerin, also known as iphoneapps in elance.com.

As expected, we won the case =D I will share some of my experience with them without revealing any confidential information.

The project started some time Nov last year. Everything went well. We sent them a list of wireframes, they drafted a list of specs from it, we discussed and decided on the deliverables for the project. There were a total of 4 deliverables. 1st one was a minor milestone to check on the progress of the website, 2nd was an alpha launch, 3rd one was a beta launch and the last one was a final closing.

During the 1st two milestones, we discovered some differences in our understanding of the website to be delivered. Some of the features we wanted were not covered in the list of specs, so we agreed to pay additional fees for Allerin to develop them. I’ll like to say that we were quite open to accept reasonable proposals from the supplier as long as the website was developed according to our expectation.

During the 2nd deliverable, the website was far from our expectations and we listed them the things that were needed to be developed and resolved, after testing the site. Although it was not really at an alpha stage, we still made the payment for them to work on the list of things outstanding from the website.

The dispute arised during the 3rd deliverable. They insisted that the beta launch had been reached. From our assessment, they were really far from a beta launch. Our understanding of beta launch is that the website is at a stage where public will be able to test on it, and there should be only minor errors or bugs to be fixed. Instead, what we saw was, key features missing on top of the errors and bugs. And they kept pushing for payment for the 3rd deliverable. My partner and me were busy testing the website to list down the things outstanding for them to work on it. Yet, they closed down the website halfway saying that we didn’t respond to them and payment was not made thus they had to close down the website. We already explained to them that we were also busy with other projects and we tried to respond to them within a week or two.

So, dispute arised and we went on to mediation. We tried to mediate by counter offering them a nominal fee for the work done and we would not take whatever they had developed. They didn’t want and insisted to go on to arbitration. During mediation, we reminded them that, as a supplier, they should be wary of going to arbitration, as reputation was more important to them than the buyer. They didn’t care…

Arbitration was not easy. All communications through email were quite hectic. There’s one thing that I want to point out about the integrity of the company. Allerin claimed that nothing had been done to the website since the dispute happened. But the truth is, they had been updating and developing the website. We even had screenshots and emails to prove that. To be improving the website while we were in the midst of an arbitration that was trying to prove that they had not delivered a beta launch at the moment of dispute… I really doubt their integrity…

And during the arbitration, we provided several evidence to show that they had not reached the beta stage (even with the imrpoved website), while their responses were always groundless claims not substantiated with any evidence. It really got us fustrated at times.

In any case, we won the arbitration. And I would like to quote some lines from the Final Award of the arbitration,

“iphoneapps wants to define beta launch as the time when the software is first released to the customer for testing, a period sometimes called alpha testing.”

“Buyer tried to tell iphoneapps that the project was not ready for beta and that the escrow release request was premature, but iphoneapps was not listening. ”

“Supplier says he did not pressure Buyer for payment, but the PMB tells a different story.”

“Buyer” and “Supplier” had been used to replace the name of the participants for confidentiality purpose.

So, that’s our experience with Allerin. For those who are engaging freelance developers, I hope that my experience above will be able to help you during the initial negotiation process. Be clear, be precise and keep records of all progress made.

Although weary from the whole arbitration process, I’m still determined to get the website up!!! Spent sometime today revamping the functional specs, hope to be ready soon before identifying another developer. Yeah~~~

Review on iPhone apps

April 28, 2009 – 7:58 pm | 2 Comments »

And so… I got my iPhone!!! After much comparisons and personal experience with my friends’ iPhones, I’ve finally decided to get myself a 16gb iPhone =D

And… it’s so easy to use!! I won’t say that I am super techy person, I do have some knowledge about IT stuffs, and it was a very painful process trying to tune my previous HTC Touch into a state that I can barely accept using it. iPhone is different!! =D The word user-friendly is undermining the capabilities of iPhone… there should be another word created for it. For now, I’ll just use user-super-friendly muahahaha

iphone-white.jpg

Transferring the contacts and calendar entries from my HTC Touch to iPhone was less than 10 minutes. Configuring the phone such as the wifi setting, email setting, ringtone etc. etc. took me about 30 minutes. Learning how to grab applications from iTunes and install it in my iPhone took 20~30 minutes. Shopping for applications in iTunes took like… hmmm… forever~~~ *still searching for more interesting applications =p* There are so many useful and fun apps in the store for me to dl, and I am barely halfway thru that list =)

I’ll just share on the iPhone apps that I had downloaded.

NEWS Apps

I would say that I am not a person who likes reading papers, not because I don’t like to update myself, but it’s the size of the reading medium that deters me, especially when I am on a train or bus. In office or home, my hands are seldom free whenever I sit down, and if you let me choose between my laptop and papers, the answer is obvious. To have a small gadget that can have all the news articles and allow me to read wherever I am and whenever I want to… wonderful =D

Apps that I’d downloaded to update myself every morning on my train ride to work:

1. Straits Time
2. iTODAY
3. Channel NewsAsia
4. WSJ (Wall Street Journal)
5. BBC Reader
6. SinaNews
7. Free RSS

For Straits Time and WSJ, users can save articles of interest in the apps. For CNA, WSJ and BBC, users can forward articles of interest to their emails. Simple and easy, as compared to cutting articles from hardcopy medium. PCs are able to achieve the same thing but the portability of the device is limited compared to a phone.

I just switched on my Wifi in the morning to download all the news by launching the apps and start reading them when I am on the train. There are definitely phones that provide news update but to have a phone that has free apps connecting directly to the respective news server and pull info upon launching, awww… lemme know if you find one (not sure if android has such features).

Social Networking Apps

1. Facebook (of course =D)
2. LinkedIn
3. TwitterFon
4. Skype

Not much need to be said about the above apps. They are similar to the ones you access using your laptop. Just that some of the features are missing from these apps to provide convenience to users. If you want the full set of features, simply open the safari browser and access them =)

Btw, I love TwitterFon!!! My id is Jphang07, feel free to follow me ya =D

Weekend Apps

1. LocalPicks (from Tripadvisor, lets you know the nearest makan place, though not as comprehensive as I wan it to be)
2. SGMalls (has list of shop directories from over 80 malls in SG)
3. Maps
4. iGV (trailers, ticket bookings for GV)
5. SG Buses
6. SGTransport
7. Carpark@SG
8. SG WiFi (easy log-in for user when they are near wireless@sg spots)

These are apps I used more oftenly during weekends thus for the name of this category. So far, iGV, SG Buses and Maps prove to be quite useful to me now. I don’t use the rest much, mainly because of the lack of comprehensiveness in the information.

Business Apps

1. Saisuke Calendar
2. Dictionary
3. iTranslate (not really useful unless when I am travelling)

I prefer Saisuke Calendar over the default calendar that is provided in the phone. Saisuke gives a better monthly overview than the default one. For the default calendar, I have to click on the day to see the activities on that day but Saisuke gives a short abstract of the activities in the monthly view and I am able to roughly figure out what’s happening on each day without clicking on it.

Games

1. TapDefense
2. Gold Miner
3. Tiki Lite
4. Scramble
5. Reign Free

I’ve downloaded the free versions of these games, and Gold Miner and Tiki Lite are crap ’cause they have only very few levels for the free version, can’t really feel the kick. The game I like most so far is TapDefense =) A good game to kill time without losing much focus on things happening around me. Just set up the towers and let it run =D

***I am still looking for interesting apps to fill up my iPhone pages, please share with me when you know of some interesting apps ya~ Thanks in advance!!

iPhone plans with Singtel

April 21, 2009 – 12:29 am | 5 Comments »

Contemplating to get an iPhone and did a comparison between the various price plans Singtel offers. Below is a table I did based on my personal needs.

 iphone-plans1.jpg

For iOne Plus plans, one min of excess outgoing call is charged at S$0.1605 => S$16.05 per month for 100 min of excess outgoing => S$385.20 for 24 months of 100 min excess outgoing call per month. Will definitely exceed 200 min of outgoing calls per month for me =p

For choice 1, the total cost for 24 months is 805.884 + 385.20 + 848 = S$2,039.08
For choice 2, the total cost for 24 months is 744.36 + 385.20 + 848 = S$1,977.56
For choice 3, the total cost for 24 months is 1,344 + 508 = S$1,852

My choice would be iFlexi Value =)

1Gb data usage per month as compared to my personal consumption on home pc is definitely way too low. But after checking out with most friends using mobile data plan, seems like exceeding 1Gb of data usage is not easy =p The unstable connection is sufficient for email checking and other small stuffs like checking nearby carpark spaces, gps etc. but not realistic to run live video streaming and other applications that require heavy bandwidth.

One of the main con for iFlexi Value is the lack of flexibility as compared for the first two. I’ll need to sign up for at elast two years whereas for the first two, the data plan only requires min 3 months contract. But this is a common problem for good deals =p

In any case, I am going for iFlexi Value =) See me with my iPhone soon, yeah!!!

Updates on a sleepless night… (3)

April 16, 2009 – 5:06 am | No Comments »

Can’t sleep again…

Not sure if you guys have caught this MCYS advertisement recently,

If not, take a quick break and spend 3 minutes to watch this short clip.

(Btw, for those who are experiencing problems embedding youtube clip onto wordpress blogs, you can visit http://www.caroline-middlebrook.com/blog/embedding-youtube-clips-into-wordpress-without-the-hassle/ , it gives a good solution to your problem =) )

Never had a video made my eyes watery within such a short time. It’s a fantastic piece of work by MCYS. Ytd afternoon, I was talking to my boss about the ad, and he told me that they (MCYS) actually did a research and found that the things people missed most from those who left, are usually the flaws, the mistakes done, the bad habits…

For those who are still looking for the one, or still sticking to the belief that “the best is yet to be”, maybe it’s time to realize that some small imperfections can actually be the signs that he or she is the one for you =)

Just a side note, I have a close friend who is married. He and his wife are always verbally abusing each other hahahahahahha and I think both of them like such way of communication lol~~~ I guess it’s treating imperfection in communication as perfection in relationship bah muahahahahhahaa

R&D in Singapore

April 9, 2009 – 4:01 am | 5 Comments »

Recently, I have received some hard comments about Singapore spending lotsa moolas on R&D but not seeing any results. Are we doing the right thing? Why are we trying to imitate others when we do not have such potential? etc. etc.

Personal view: I have the utmost respect for the local government =D and please don’t think that I am running for PAP, no, I am not. I think that they’ve done a great job in maintaining the stability and bringing S’pore to where she is now. 44 yrs to transform a small town to Singapore, it’s an amazing feat, I assure you.

Understand that there’ve been lotsa negative comments out there, such as why is there a need to bring in foreign workers, government is not trying hard enough to help local people in this recession, why government always “peng” way, last time say no casino, now say can, why is the government spending money in needless area etc. etc.

Heard lotsa such comments when I am taking taxis, talking to people, and reading blogs.

I’ll never argue with anyone who with such comments, because, they are right. But, the truth is, there’s many sides to an issue. You see this way, I see that way. There’s no way to please everyone, I understand that. And I also understand that much has been done by ah gong to please most people.

Take for example, the foreign workers issue. We are not a big population. It takes time to upgrade a big portion of our population to highly skilled professionals that can take on works that have high value add to themselves and to the nation. And we need highly skilled professionals not only for foreign MNCs investing here, but also local MNCs expanding locally. Time is needed for the locals to upgrade to a level to take on these positions and the meantime, they have to filled up. Those companies can’t wait for the manpower to come. Thus foreign professionals have to be brought in to fill the gap at the moment. And MOM has been trying hard to maintain a decent ratio so that locals won’t lose out.

Next, about investment in R&D. It’s something which all developed nations are doing. It’s a way to maintain competitive edge against nations. You can’t expect a company to pay production line workers S$5k/month. They’ll just move their production plant elsewhere. As our standard of living goes up, we have to move upstream as well, and that means, going up the value chain, R&D or finance. Finance is a volatile market, lotsa fluctuations, as you can observe from the recession now. R&D is something that is more recession tolerant. Once something is invented, the benefits that can be reaped from it can span across a long time. And of course, those researchers involved in coming out with the product will be highly soughted in the market. Knowledge built, is value created. If we continue to stay where we are, servicing industry, manufacturing plants, financing sectors, then our value will drop with others coming up. We must move on. Although results have not been apparent, there are improvements in the companies doing R&D from the past few years. It takes time, it’s not a today-do-tomorrow-have thing. Afterall, we are only a 44 yrs old country.

I have had friends from Scandinavian countries coming to S’pore, friends from other parts of Europe, friends from China etc. Most of them have great praises about this place, the stability, the environment, the food, and many other things that we might not even have noticed it before. You might argue that the grass is always greener on the other side but hey, if they can say that it means something right. Try looking from their perspective, learn to appreciate, and you’ll see things you’ve never seen before.

Having said that, bureacracy is still one big headache, at least for me. But again, which government has no bureacracy? hehehe

Updates on a sleepless night… (2)

April 9, 2009 – 3:08 am | 1 Comment »

Sorry for the long wait =p Haven’t been getting any sleepless night recently hahaha

Ok, so coming to the good news. First of all, is of cosh, Mr and Mrs Ye’s wedding =D Ye Zijia finally settled down hahaha

 zijiatess.jpg

Both of them were so shy that their lips barely touched for 10 seconds when asked to kiss each other. Boooooooooooo~~~~~ hahahahahahaha

 zijiatess2.jpg

And this is us again, the armpit gang hahaha

The next thing is the strong bonding between us (Zijia + Tess, Shengwang + Jane, Zhiwen + Wenfeng, James, me + Weiling, and the regularly MIA Zhihui + Joanette). I know it’s gay to say this again and again, but I can’t resist the urge to say it another time. I am really happy to still have this grp of close friends including their spouses who joined our outings as often as they could. As I had mentioned to James several times, I had shared with older people about the outings we had and the things we had been doing, and they were all telling me that it’s not common to have such close friends and regular get-togethers at our age. And it just gets lesser and lesser with age. I must learn to treasure it as much as possible, and I will =) Thanks guys hahaha damn gay =p

Third thing on the list is the recognition of the work I had done. People close to me will know that I am someone who values recognition more than monetary benefits. Sometimes, both come together but sometimes they don’t, and if they don’t, I put more emphasis on recognition. However, I am not totally disregarding monetary benefits, who doesn’t love money wahahhahahaa. Anyway, I am glad that my efforts finally paid off after 2 years ,with some divine intervention hehehe. It’s a good feeling, and I’ve been missing it since 2005. Things are finally getting on track for me =D

Fourth thing is, as you might have realized above, I am not single anymore =) Going to be gay again to say ,”words are not enough to describe my happiness” hahahahahahahaha goosebumps jumping out lol. Anyway, seriously, I am happy to have her with me, for the things she had done, for the time she had spend with me, for the acceptance of my friends, etc etc.

That’s about all for now……. I really hope that there’ll be a fifth thing on the list related to my business venture, but every thing is still at works currently. Hope that there’ll be some good things on it to update soon *praying hard*

P.S.: All things mentioned above are based on random arrangement, there’s no preference in any of them. I am just happy that everyone of them happened =D

P.P.S.: The Indian developer (Allerin) just pulled some new stunts, again… sigh… seriously, I don’t think they have any integrity. That’s my personal opinion. I am still waiting for the arbitration results. Once it’s out, I will post it here with the important conversations made, then you can judge if they are good…
